Auschwitz Concentration Camp
Known as the symbol of Holocaust around the world.
Its origins date back to the 1940 when Nazis established the camp in the neighbourhood of Polish town – Oswiecim that has been annexed to the Third Reich. The camp was given the name of Konzentrationslager Auschwitz and since has been the place of imprisonment and death of many Poles, Soviet prisoners of war, Gypsies and others. In 1942 it became the first of many sites of the mass murder committed against the European Jews as part of the Nazi plan of their complete destruction. Consisting of 2 main parts: Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II – Birkenau it was the biggest camp in history of The Second World War. After liberation by the Red Army in 1944 the world heard about the genocide committed in the camp. The Nazis wanted to hide their dreadful deeds and destroyed some of the documents and buildings. Hopefully not all was lost and on the site a museum was founded so that, what had happened would never be forgotten. The numbers speak for themselves: out of approximately 400,000 people registered 50% died as a result of starvation, executions, diseases, inhuman living conditions, torture and criminal medical experiments.
The tour includes a walk with a professional guide around the grounds of both camps, entering buildings (with exhibition inside) and crematoria, watching a documental movie about the liberation of the camp. A must for those interested in Second World War history. Be prepared though for an emotional aspect of the visit – it is not only a place of great importance but also of great sorrow.
